With three kids, a mortgage and looming recession, I decided to scratch my entrepreneurial itch and bootstrap a company with the mission of using social media to connect brands to networks of fans who like, maybe even love them. Brand Networks was born in a shabby loft over a bar called appropriately named Lucy’s. With some luck and pluck, we became a strategic partner to Facebook, driving revenue and managing brands through the peaks and valleys of advertising to people, not pixels. Social media advertising floodgates opened and we rode the wave with Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Instagram and Snapchat.
Ten years, two hundred employees and many grey hairs later, I sold a minority stake in Brand Networks to a private equity firm and continued to steer the company through three acquisitions, a debt financing and sale of part of our technology stack to Snap Inc. In 2017 I began the search for my replacement to navigate for the next leg of BN’s journey.
Having witnessed the weaponization of social media to attack our democracy I decided to put my decade of experience and my own capital to use helping candidates, causes and campaigns use social media for good. Working with a handful of progressive candidates and the DSCC we launched Booster, a crowdfunding software for social media amplification. We have a lofty mission to give power back to the people to boost real messages from verified voices..
I currently serve on the Board of Advisors to the Carsey School (UNH), advise a handful of startups in and around social media marketing, and provide seed investment independently and as a LP of Boston Seed.
